Staircases Accidents & The Importance of Handrails

Staircases remain one of the most hazardous circulation areas in professional, public, and private spaces, especially when essential preventive safety measures are not in place.

According to recent studies, over 27% of falls on stairs in workplaces are due to the absence or improper installation of handrails. Handrails are not just optional accessories but a vital safety component, as well as a legal obligation.

Why Staircases Are a High-Risk Area

The absence or poor maintenance of handrails significantly contributes to accidents:

  • Falls due to loss of balance
  • Slips on slippery surfaces
  • Accessibility challenges for vulnerable users (e.g. the elderly or people with disabilities)

The Role of Handrails in Accident Prevention

Handrails are a key safety feature on stairs and ramps. The updated Building Code (Ministerial Decision Υ.Α. ΥΠΕΝ/ΔΑΟΚΑ/66006/2360/2023, Government Gazette 3985/B/22.6.2023) sets out clear and strict requirements.

What the 2023 Building Regulation Requires

Mandatory Installation

  • Handrails are mandatory on all stairways and ramps with a slope greater than 6%.
  • If the clear width of a staircase exceeds 1.20 meters, handrails are required on both sides.
  • Handrails must be continuous along the entire length of each stairway or ramp.

Installation Height

  • Must be placed between 0.75 m and 1.00 m, measured vertically from the front edge of the step.
  • Ensures ergonomic use and support for all users.

Technical Specifications

  • Form: Must allow the hand to slide smoothly without interruption.
  • Clearance: At least 5 cm from adjacent surfaces along the entire length.
  • Strength: Must withstand a concentrated load of 90 kp (approximately 900 N), applied horizontally or vertically at any point.

The importance of Accessibility and Safety

Handrails :

  • Prevent falls and injuries
  • Provide easier access for people with disabilities and older adults
  • Ensure safe use of emergency exit ramps

Proper installation and regular maintenance are critical to ensuring effectiveness.

Consequences of Non-Compliance for Employers

Failure to comply with the regulation can result in:

  • Fines from urban planning or labor inspection authorities
  • Civil liability in case of accidents
  • Loss of insurance coverage in cases of injury

Employers and facility managers must ensure full compliance with legislation.
